The starting point for this ~ 20 km round trip is the Double Eagle Hotel in Rees – Haldern in the Lower Rhine.
From here, you proceed across the Bermuth Platz , turning right into Klosterstrasse. After about 800m, you’ll see the Battenberg Tower on your left, a Watchtower dating back to the 15th Century.
After another 200m, turn right into the Turmallee. On the left is the Forest Cemetery, which contains the graves of many of Halderns’ soldiers who died during the Second World War.
The route then proceeds through the forest, past the “Blaue Haus” Manor, then along the railway and Bundesstrasse 8 (B8). We cross Bundesstrasse 8 (B8) and follow the Cycle Path around the Reeser Meer, an enormous and highly scenic lake.
At the crossroads, we turn left and take the Cycle Path that leads to Wesel. After about 2 km, we reach the Reeser district of “Haffen” with its Catholic Church. We cycle straight across the intersection, then turn right into Blumenstrasse. After Wohngebit, the route continues up the Deichstrasse. Here, we turn right, and approach the Catholic Church of St. Lambertus.
Opposite the Church of St. Lambertus you’ll find “The Eagle” – a cosy Restaurant and Beer Garden. (Opening Hours: Sat-Sun. open around 10:00, all other days from open from 15:00 . Closed all day Tuesdays).
After taking suitable refreshments here, we return to the tour route and travel along Blumenstrasse. From here, we turn right again onto the Cycle Path back to Wesel. From Finkenschlagweg, we turn right again, and travel past Averforth House, with its famous sculpture, the “Mater Dolorosa“
The Finkenschlagweg brings us to the Reeser District of “Mehr” which has a Protestant Church in the Catholic Parish of St. Vincentius. The village also has a Restaraunt – “zum Hirsch”, with a Beer Garden and miniature golf course (Opening hours: daily from 15:00, Sundays from 10:00).
The excursion continues along the road leading to Mehrhog. After about 100m, we turn left onto the Cycle path to the crossroads , cycle past Bellinghovenerstrasse, and over the little bridge in the Upper Poststrasse. In the Upper Poststrasse, there is a delightful Restaurant – ”Zum Reisenden Mann” (Opening hours: Tues.-Sat. 10:30 to 14:00 and 17:30 to 00:00. Sun.: 10:30 to 0:00, Mon. Closed
Back over the bridge, we turn right into Bellinghovenerstrasse. After about 1 km, on the right you’ll see Castle Bellinghoven. First recorded in the year 1206, it is now used as a Meeting Hall and Youth Club.
We continue through this beautiful rural area on the Cycle Path. Then we turn right. The route continues forward until it reaches Bundesstrasse 8 (B8), and the Railway Crossing.
